Bandidos gringos en la Patagonia

Esto que les voy a contar duerme entre tantas leyendas que ya no se sabe que es hecho histórico y que son invenciones de la imaginación.

Cuenta la historia que el 20 de febrero de 1901, Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid y Etta Place (tres “outlaws”) partieron de Nueva York a bordo del vapor Británico “Herminius” hacia Buenos Aires, Argentina. Los tres compañeros compraron una cabaña con cuatro habitaciones sobre un terreno inmenso a las orillas del río blanco, cerca de Cholila, Chubut.

El 14 de febrero de 1905, dos bandidos de habla inglés que se cree eran Butch y Sundance, asaltaron un banco en Río Gallegos escapando con una suma equivalente a U$ 100.000 de hoy. El 1 de Mayo venden el rancho en Cholila porque se sentían muy amenazados. Por todas partes se hablaba de los 2 bandidos y su compañera norteamericanos y del precio que tenían sus cabezas.

Alertados por un comisario que estaba enamorado de Etta, Butch y sus compañeros fueron hasta San Carlos de Bariloche. Desde allí cruzaron la frontera y llegaron al refugio de Chile. El 19 de diciembre de ese año volvieron a la Argentina con un cuarto hombre con el cual robaron el banco de la nación en Villa Mercedes. Perseguidos por un grupo de hombres armados se fueron a refugiar nuevamente a Chile con $ 12.000 bajo los brazos.

El 30 de junio de 1906 Etta, cansada ya de correr, esconderse y vivir sabiendo que en cualquier momento su vida se le podría escapar de las manos sin remedio, decidió regresar a San Francisco escoltada por Sundance Kid. Parker (Butch Cassidy), bajo el alias de Santiago Maxwell consiguió trabajo en una mina de estaño en Santa Vera Cruz, Bolivia, donde luego se encontró con Sundance que volvía de dejar a su amiga Etta.

La muerte de Butch Cassidy al día de hoy es un misterio sin resolver. El 3 de noviembre de 1908 el correo de la mina de plata “Armayo Franke y Cía.” fue robado por 2 ladrones norteamericanos en las proximidades de San Vicente adonde los ladrones se dirigieron luego del asalto.

Tres noches después del incidente, la casa en la que estaban los 2 ladrones fue rodeada por soldados locales y el alcalde del lugar, todos ellos armados con armas de largo alcance y una gran potencia de fuego. Según se cuenta hubo un tiroteo muy feroz que duro casi toda la noche. A la mañana cuando ya hacía rato no se escuchaba un solo ruido de adentro de la casa, entraron con mucha precaución y encontraron dos cuerpos con muchísimas heridas en los brazos y piernas, uno con una herida de bala en la cabeza y otro con un agujero en la sien. Aparentemente ambos se habían suicidado, pero nunca se pudo confirmar ya que la casa tenía agujeros por todos lados de las balas que habían disparado los soldados. Los cuerpos fueron enterrados en el anonimato en el cementerio local. Hubo mucha gente que quiso encontrar esas tumbas anónimas, pero al día de hoy no se han encontrado restos con muestras de ADN que correspondan con el de los parientes vivos de Butch Cassidy y Sundance Kid.

Según la hermana de Parker (Butch Cassidy), Lula Parker Betenson, él volvió a EE.UU. y vivió anónimamente durante años. En el libro biográfico que escribió sobre su hermano cita varias veces situaciones en las que gente que conocía a Parker lo vieron luego de 1908.

Anécdotas y evidencia circunstancial mostrarían que Longabaugh habría regresado a los Estados Unidos al igual que su compañero muriendo en el año 1937, terminando sus días en paz.

Hay quienes dicen que Butch Cassidy fue a Paris para alterar sus facciones con un cirujano de ahí. Toda la correspondencia que había de Parker y Longabaugh termina con el incidente de San Vicente. ¿Serán todas coincidencias?, ¿habrán sido humo y espejos todos estos hechos?, ¿un señuelo que todos creímos sin cuestionar?, ¿o habrá sido verdad y nos están queriendo vender historias que no fueron?

¿Cómo saber? Cuando un hecho está tan minado de leyendas, mentiras es difícil saber a quién creer, ¿no?

This story is one of so many legends when you no longer know what is fact and what becomes legend.

History tells us that on 20 February 1901, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and Etta Place (three "outlaws"), left New York aboard the British steamer "Herminius" for Buenos Aires, Argentina. Once in Argentina they bought a cottage with four rooms on a huge field on the banks of the White River, near Cholila, Chubut.

On February 14, 1905, two English-speaking bandits, believed to be Butch and Sundance, robbed a bank in Rio Gallegos, making a getaway with a sum equivalent to U.S. $ 100,000 today. On May 1, they sold the ranch in Cholila because they felt their lives in danger. Everywhere they went they heard stories about the two North American bandits and their companion, and especially of the price that had been set upon their heads.

Alerted by a deputy who was in love with Etta, Butch and his companions fled to San Carlos de Bariloche. From there they crossed the border and reached the refuge in Chile.

On 19 December of that same year, they returned to Argentina with a fourth unidentified man and held up “El banco de la Nación” in Villa Mercedes. Pursued by a group of armed men they took refuge in Chile with $ 12,000 in their pockets.

On June 30, 1906, Etta, tired of running, hiding and living with the knowledge that at any moment her life would be over, she returned to San Francisco with the Sundance Kid. Parker (Butch Cassidy), under the alias of James Maxwell, got a job in a tin mine in Santa Vera Cruz, Bolivia, where Sundance met him later that year after leaving her friend in the United States.

When Butch Cassidy died, is still an unsolved mystery. On 3 November 1908 the post from the silver mine "Armay Franke y Cia." was stolen by 2 Americans in the vicinity of San Vicente where the thieves went, after the robbery.

Three nights after the incident, the house where the 2 thieves were staying, was surrounded by soldiers and the local mayor, all armed with long range weapons and high firepower. The witnesses of that day tell us that there was a fierce firefight that lasted almost all night. The next morning, when a long time passed with no sound heard from inside the house, they entered with great care, and found two bodies with many wounds in their arms and legs. One had a gunshot wound in the head and the other had a hole in the temple. Both apparently had committed suicide, but it was never confirmed, as the house had holes on all sides from the bullets the soldiers had fired. The unnamed bodies were buried in the local cemetery. There have been many people who wanted to find these unmarked graves, but up until now, no remains correspond to the DNA with that of living relatives of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

According to Parker´s (Butch Cassidy) sister, Lula Parker Betenson, he returned to the U.S. and lived anonymously for years. In the biographical book she wrote about his brother she often quotes situations in which people who knew Parker saw him after 1908.

Anecdotal and circumstantial evidence show that Longabaugh would have returned to the United States as his partner did, and died in 1937, ending his days peacefully.

Some say that Butch Cassidy went to Paris to alter his features with a surgeon there. All correspondence of Parker and Longabaugh ended after the San Vicente incident. Are these all coincidences?, have all these facts been illusions?, A decoy we believed without question?, or was it true and they are trying to sell us stories that were not?

How can one tell? When events are so mixed with legends, it is difficult to know the truth, isn´t it?
